7 Quick Takes Friday

1. We’re at the halfway point with summer vacation. Normally by now I’m banging my head against the wall in abject horror. This year, well, I’m not. I’m NOT! 🙂 The kids are pretty much able to keep themselves occupied. And with the 95 degree weather we’re having, I’m not complaining if they want to be on the Wii, or the computer or the DSi’s. A peaceful home is a good home, people!

2. I’m making my lists and checking them twice, because this time next week I’ll be packing like a maniac for Lake Michigan. Did you know there’s an island in it? A habitable island? THERE IS!! And my husband’s family has a cabin there. It’s called Beaver Island and is quite beautiful. It’s not like Nantucket Island (as I assured my brother)–MUCH more rustic and not populated. Our first day is 10-12 hours of driving (depending on how many potty stops we make!) and sleeping over in a hotel. The second day is 3 more hours of driving, lunch and grocery shopping (cheaper prices on the mainland), then a 2 1/2 hour ferry ride. With four kids.

3. Pursuant to #2, I’m extremely grateful for the brilliant mind that invented portable DVD players. And the one who came up with DSi’s. Oh, and books on CD. We’ll be going through the entire Chronicles of Narnia, put out by Focus on the Family. It’s not word for word, but it’s a dramatization and keeps very well to the story.

4. Has anyone else ever heard of Ruth Chew? We had a few of her books when I was growing up. Over the years I’ve found a few, but never seen The Wednesday Witch, which was one of my all-time favorites as a child. I bought it online this past week and started reading it out loud to the kids. And it is just as wonderful now as it was then (which sometimes doesn’t work–like watching The Yellow Submarine as an adult). If you find it in your local library or at a yard sale, I strongly encourage you to try it (or any of her other books). They’re quick reads and very fun.

5. Summer Brain hit this week. Laura had an orthodontist appointment on Monday afternoon. I KNEW that. I REMEMBERED that Monday morning. I DID! But Monday afternoon I picked up the kids from camp and the neighbor boy came over to play and it went right out of my brain. Until that evening. D’Oh! With NASA camp this coming week and Michigan after that, I’m not sure I’ll be able to reschedule until mid-August!

6. I am so enjoying Jim being employed by an employer instead of self-employed. There are downsides, of course–the commute being the main one, but the upsides of guaranteed work and therefore guaranteed pay cannot be overestimated or overstated. And his company is paid by one of the fees on one of your utility bills, so it’s not profit driven. I’m not saying he couldn’t be downsized, but the odds are majorly against it. Work is GOOD. Money in the bank is good. Paying down debt (instead of getting into more of it) is GREAT.

7. Apparently I’ve lost my mind. Because I’ve suggested that (once we get back from vacation) we get a playmate for Coco. Everyone is very excited. I figure the hardest part of dog-ownership (like having kids!) is going from 0 to 1. Once you have 1, the shock isn’t so bad to get another. Right. Right? Or am I completely insane and should rethink this idea?? Input please!
