7 Quick Takes Friday

1. If I could, I would send the rain we are getting to Texas. The rain has been non-stop. Before Irene, we had the most rain ever recorded in one month. We were saturated. Then Hurricane Irene. Then some unseasonable wet weather. Then the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee. People, we are WET. Thankfully, our home (and most of the neighborhood) is on high ground. We haven’t had any problems personally other than losing power from Irene. And that was more of a nuisance than anything. But hey, God, if you want to take the rain to Texas, please do so. We won’t mind a bit!

2. My friend, Julie, posted this on Facebook this morning. I’m in love.

The lyrics are here if you want.

3. I’m reading Colossians this week. Huh. Spell check doesn’t like that word! Well, PPPBBBTTT to spell check! Rabbit Hole! So, I’m reading Colossians this week, and reading a college NT bible course textbook with it. I love reading the bible (when I make myself actually SIT and READ), but I also love all the background stuff that it doesn’t tell you–which is why I’m loving this textbook. It’s almost like a sermon without the “here’s how you should change your life” part. It gives the background of the time, the people, the archeology involved. Its’ GREAT. If you want to do something similar, here it is. You can get it on Amazon and probably CBD as well.

4. We had back to school night at the local elementary. I poked Jim a few minutes into it and said “Do you realize this is our 6th one?” Kindergarten seems eons ago. Bennett and Laura are both “kindergarten helpers” even. The years are flying by, People. FLYING BY.

5.Pursuant to #4, I have really enjoyed my first week at home. I always try to get at least a few days to myself once they hit school. Jim’s been home some, and my brother visited (more on that next), but it’s been, by and large, a nice and quiet week. BLISS.

6. Ok, so my brother….he called Tuesday afternoon and says he wants to visit before going back to Florida (he’s a snow bird–summers in Rehoboth Beach, De and everything else West Palm, FL). He’s leaving next Tuesday. He can’t do the weekends. When can he come? Thursday, as I said, was back to school night and Friday is karate, so only Wednesday would work. So he left, turned around to get fudge and candy from the boardwalk for us (nice!), and came up 95. Trying to get off at 202, there was  a big accident. He was stopped completely. Finally got past that. Got to the 30 bypass and whoops! TONS of rain (See #1). They were going 15 mph. Normally 55-70. He finally got off at our exit and drove the 2 miles to our neighborhood. Which he couldn’t get into because of a creek flooding onto the highway (See #1) and it was completely closed off. Jim had him turn around, go back down the road to the previous exit off the highway, pass our exit and then do a U-Turn. He finally got here more than 3 hours after he originally left! Thankfully, he viewed it as an “adventure” and was fine. 🙂

7. We’re leaving for our anniversary getaway in four weeks. Jim’s mom is going to watch the kids Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. I cannot WAIT!

It’s the Best Day Ever….

The title is a song from Phinneas and Ferb, if you didn’t know.

I’M ALONE. I’ve talked to my mom, I’ve checked email and Facebook and I’m even blogging!

I’ve got a huge to-do list, but I’m not in any massive hurry to start. It’s pouring outside, so going to the bank and the library are a little less appealing!

I think I’ll go and spend some time with God. That would be a good way to start my alone time, doncha think? 🙂

The Day Before La La La

Today is Labor Day. I’ve been laboring on laundry all yesterday and today (7 loads and counting and it’s almost all children’s clothes!) and not QUITE counting down, but getting close.

I’m doing all this laundry because tomorrow is one of the best days of the whole year. Almost up there with Christmas, but that’s the Lord’s birth and thusly gets top billing forever. Almost up there with Thanksgiving, but that has pumpkin pie and whipped cream and thusly gets 2nd to top billing. Almost up there with the day I go to the spa and get a massage but that, well, that’s obvious. So, ok, the FOURTH best day of the year.

Because people, THEY ARE ALL GOING TO BE IN SCHOOL TOMORROW! Not just one, like we had in the middle of June. Not just three, like we had last week, BUT EVERYONE.

ALL FOUR OF MY CHILDREN WILL BE OUT OF THE HOUSE! For a LONG TIME!

I know I have completely offended those of you who homeschool and manage to love your children all day long. But Oh My WORD. These past few weeks remind me of why I love those big giant (and also short) yellow buses. Because oh my WORD, does Ethan need STRUCTURE!! By the end of the summer he just can’t handle all this time. He has to yell and bug and hit and annoy. Not just the kids but also Jim and me.

But tomorrow he will be in a “structured environment” for more hours of the day than he’ll be at home. He’ll leave at 7:05 am and get home at 3:30pm. And then we’ll have homework and dinner and a little playtime and it will be time for bed. And there won’t be a whole lot of time leftover for fighting.

Happy Sigh. Peace is good.

Plus, as an added bonus, I’ll be back to my regularly-scheduled blogging. I’ve missed you all. Have you missed me?? 😀

7 Quick Takes Friday

1. WHAT. A. WEEK!! We lost power at 10:30 Saturday night right as Irene started. We didn’t get it back until Monday afternoon around 2:30. No power, no water. Four children. Two adults. Monday we went over to Jim’s mom’s because she had power and flushing toilets. The things we take for granted!

2. Pursuant to #1, the first day of school was postponed until Tuesday. The kids were thrilled, although I wasn’t because of the cause of the delay. So far the uniforms are working out. I have to do laundry a little more frequently, but it will be ok, I think. Easier once we hit cold weather and they have more long pants.

3. Jim and I booked our 16th anniversary getaway. Having not had many dates this year, and having not gotten away for the last two anniversaries, we’re going to the Poconos, to this place. Looks nice, no? Jim’s mom will watch the kids for the weekend. Nearby, Jim Thorpe (which sounds like a person but is really a town) is having their fall folliage festival, which looks really neat. All in all, I’m really looking forward to the weekend!

4. Although I’ve said we haven’t had many dates, tonight we happen to be going to one. Twin Brook Winery has a concert series. You bring your outside chairs, some munchies and sit and listen. Oh, and you can have some wine too if you want, although I’m not overly fond of it. I went to our local cheese shop (mmmm!) and bought four different kinds. I can’t wait until tonight!

5. Ethan had his 6 month eval with the agency providing the MT (mobile therapist) in our home. Jim and I are not seeing any changes at all and are giving this thing 4 more months. That’s it. That will be just a month shy of two years. After that, we just accept that we have two sets of children…Bennett, Laura and Catie on one side and Ethan on the other. We’ve been trying to fix this for YEARS and it’s honestly not working. Just two days ago I overheard a conversation where Catie asked Bennett and Laura if they liked Ethan. No, they agreed, they didn’t. It breaks my heart.

6. The kids are sleeping in this morning! After three days of school and being allowed to stay up late last night, it’s a luxury. Although Laura got up earlier than I did so she could play her DS quietly. The weirdo. I will always choose sleep. Unless there’s a good book. Books win over sleep a lot of times!

7. The title of our poconos getaway’s website is:

Brand new hot tub recently installed try some adventure or simply relax!!!

I emailed the owners and said “you DO realize how suggestive that sounds, don’t you? 🙂

Yeah, I’m THAT person!
